Is it possible to get accepted the first time you apply to PT school? I definitely plan on applying to 8 schools, but I've heard that lots of people have to apply 2 or 3 application cycles. I have about a 3.6 Pre-Req and Cum GPA with 100 observation hours. I know that you can't tell me if I will get in ;) But do you know people who applied and got in right out of undergrad?

DPTKNOW :Oh totally ! Many people get in right after college. Your stats seem solid so I think you have a really good shot of getting in the first time. If you don’t get in - don’t panic. It happens more often than you think. There is nothing wrong with your ability to become a PT it’s just that your stats need a little polishing! Again, I know plenty of people who have gotten in their first time! Email me if you have any further questions etc :)

Hi, I find your blog really informative thank you for doing all this for us. I live in the NYC area and I know that none of the schools in this area look at the last 60 credits, I have a couple of C's is it still worth while to retake these classes?

DPT KNOW :  Hi! Are you looking to stay in the NYC region? It’ll definitely boost your PTCAS pre-req GPA, therefore I say its worth it. Cs are red flags for DPT schools especially if there is no effort to at least retake some of them. If you were to apply to any programs in your area, and contact them I am positive they will still tell you to retake them. Look at schools that take the higher of the two grades if you retake a class. I just want you to be as successful with your application cycle as possible, therefore retaking classes is worth it! I promise. It might be a pain to BUT the reward of getting in to school is worth it.

Very appreciative of this blog! So I earned a couple C's in (prereq) classes during my undergraduate career (including A&P), and am now retaking them at a CC level. What is your opinion about programs caring about what level I retake them at?

DPT KNOW: Awe thank you so much! I appreciate you for reading!

Okay so, its good that you are retaking them. From what I have learned schools don’t necessarily mind if you retake courses at a community college most end up being okay with it. I myself retook a course at a community college and had no trouble with it. If you completely unsure I would definitely ask the scores that you are applying to so that you have the correct answer. I have heard of some schools requiring Anatomy and Physiology to be taken at a 4 year University. BUT, I have seen plenty of applicants take these course at a community college and get accepted. In short: I think your fine, but still do your research about the schools you are applying to. That was a really good question ! Thanks for asking. if you need anything else let me know.

Do you by chance know anything about NIU' PT program? I am really looking in to applying (I'm in my undergrad at NIU) and I'm looking for all the info I can get.

DPT KNOW: Hi! Thanks for the question. NIUs program is one of the cheapest in the state of IL. They are currently adding new faculty and have moved to a building that offers a little more for the PT students. They have a clinic that students get to use to interact with patients. The faculty is good too. They offer some opportunities for research, and I believe there are sometimes GA positions available. I know that they look at your entire application as well. I believe( I would call and check  and ask about this ) that they take the higher of the two grades if you have to retake a class. I know the GRE is required more so for the graduate school than the program. So I think the program “loosely” considers it. I know that as of recently they also have a white coat ceremony for DPT students.

If you want more info or have specific questions go ahead and email me!

Was you GPA competitive? I know you mentioned re-taking classes. I got a B in A&P when I was a freshman (I didn't take it seriously). So I'm planning on re-taking it. I'm just trying to figure out how to boost my competitiveness. If I can continue to get all A's, I may have a 3.5-3.6 GPA when I apply....Which isn't too great.

DPT KNOW:

Hi!

Okay so my cumulative GPA was about a 3.5-3.7 depending on the school and how they looked at classes. My Pre-req ranged from a 3.3-3.8 also depending on the school. PTCAS averaged my grades that I retook, which made my GPA lower.  I think retaking the course could definitely help your GPA. I personally think that your GPA is competitive I have heard from different admissions liaisons  a 3.4> is competitive. Don’t be so hard on yourself it seems you have passion for PT and want to do well and that will show. I think you are doing great!

Do you have any experience with In State Tuition vs Out? I live in North Carolina and would like to attend a school in Florida. I've read some articles saying that there are ways around being considered an out of state student. Any information would be greatly appreciated. -Shane

DPT KNOW:

Hi Shane,

Good question. Currently I was trying to do this myself because I will be attending school in Florida from out of state. I discovered that it depends on if the school offers that as an option. Some schools may offer it in place of a scholarship to lower the cost of attendance for you. My school does not offer this option. It is good to ask to find out for sure. I wish I had more information for you. If I do find out more I will definitely post about it.

Hi I want to thank you for sharing advice and your journey to PT. I have found it very helpful! I have two interviews coming up this week one at Western University and another at West Coast U. I know that you have been to a good amount of interviews already and was wondering if you could let me know what questions you would asked. Also you said that you provided the interviewers with your resume, how did you bring up passing them out? Thank you!

DPT KNOW:

Sure thing thamks for the question. First and foremost be yourself. Be confident, if you are your nerves will be there, but less lol. The programs want to get to know you. I usually brought the resume up in the beginning when they asked me to tell them about myself. This helped them see who I was beyond my application. Or i would give it to them at the end of the interview during the time of when it was open for Q&A. Any time where things could be discussed.

Some questions :

What are the professors specialties?
Do professors have an open door policy?
What do they think are characteristics of a successful student in the program?
Do they have research opportunities?
Extracurriculars for students to participate in?
What do students struggle most with in the program?
What are their teaching styles?
Cost of living?

These are just some. I will be writing on this soon. I am so sorry for my delayed response. I was preparing for my interview with a school today. You can email me directly if you need anything else
